Kochi Roads of Shikoku

Trail to Tsukiyama

Trail to Tsukiyama

This 11.6 km route branches off from Sunny Road (National Route 321) and serves as the starting point for exploring the coastline of Otsuki Town. The entire route is paved, making it easy to walk and enjoyable even for beginners. The starting point, Kozaitsuno, is considered the birthplace of Tosa coral harvesting. Legend has it that Japan's coral history began when a fisherman accidentally caught a pink coral here. Tsukiyama Shrine along the way serves as the guardian deity of the Otsuki region and is also known as an additional pilgrimage site for the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage.

    Tsukiyama Shrine

Originally known as Shugekizan Gekko-in Nansho-ji Temple, Tsukiyama Shrine was once a sacred site where Shinto and Buddhist practices coexisted. However, following the Meiji-era separation of Buddhism and Shinto, it was renamed Tsukiyama Shrine. It is revered as the guardian deity of the coral-rich Otsuki region and is also a supplementary pilgrimage site of the Shikoku 88-temple circuit. The name Tsukiyama (moon mountain) comes from the shrine's shintai (sacred object), a moon-shaped stone.
