Kochi Roads of Shikoku

Odo Monkey Trail

Odo Monkey Trail

This 11.6 km trail starts at Hirayama and extends from Komanme to Kashiwajima. The first 8 km from Komanme to Odo Observatory and Yaen Park follows a mountain path. From the Odo Observatory, hikers can enjoy a 360° panoramic view before visiting Yaen Park, where they may be charmed by the monkeys' playful behavior—though sightings depend on luck, as they are wild. Continuing on, hikers will encounter Kannon Rock, a stone pillar resembling the standing figure of Kannon, and a cliffside observatory overlooking the dramatic Odo Coastline and the Pacific Ocean. At the final destination, Kashiwajima Island, where the Bungo Channel meets the Kuroshio Current, an astonishing one-third of Japan's marine fish species can be found. This makes it one of the world's top diving spots.

  • 1
    Odo Observatory

Located at the summit of Mt. Odo, this observatory offers a stunning 360° panoramic view. One of the best viewpoints in Otsuki Town, it provides sweeping vistas of the sheer cliffs of the Odo Coastline, as well as the offshore islands of Okino and Ukuru in Sukumo City.

  • 2
    Yaen Park

The only place in Tosa where wild monkeys are fed, this park is home to a dominant troop leader with an impressive presence, while the young monkeys' playful gestures delight visitors.

  • 3
    Oman Falls

Despite its name, Oman Falls is not a waterfall; in the local dialect, "taki" (Japanese for "waterfall") refers to a cliff. Legend has it that a blind woman named Oman fell in love with an island guardian. Believing she would interfere with his duties, she tragically threw herself into the sea, 120 meters below. In memory of her sorrowful tale, the site became known as Oman Falls.

  • 4
    Kannon Rock

Rising 30 meters from the sea, this stone pillar closely resembles the standing figure of Kannon. According to legend, during the suppression of the Shimabara Rebellion in 1638, a government envoy named Amamori Kyudaiyu was gravely wounded. While returning by ship, he followed a ray of light that led him to Kashiwajima, where he passed away. It is said that this light emanated from Kannon Rock.

  • 5
    Kannon Rock Observatory

Another observatory along the Odo Monkey Trail, this spot offers breathtaking views of the dramatic cliffs of the Odo Coastline and the deep blue Pacific stretching to the horizon. Although Kannon Rock itself is not visible from here, lucky visitors might spot sea turtles.

  • 6
    Kashiwajima Island

At Kashiwajima Island, where the Bungo Channel meets the Kuroshio Current, an astonishing one-third of Japan's marine fish species can be found. This makes it one of the world's top diving spots. With crystal-clear waters that create the illusion of boats floating in midair, it draws in a lot of visitors as one of the world's top diving destinations. In recent years, a family of dolphins has taken up residence here, delighting both locals and visitors.
