    Starting Point: Takanawa Temple

Takanawa Temple sits roughly 300 meters east of Mt. Takanawa's summit (986 meters above sea level), at an elevation of about 900 meters. Historically, the Kono clan, rulers of this region, prayed here for victory in battle. The temple houses a wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva. With an 800-year history, this renowned Shingon Buddhist temple is also the family temple of the Kono clan. The current temple structure was rebuilt in 1767 (Meiwa 4). Surrounding the temple are ancient, towering cedar trees that reflect its long history, including the Senju Sugi above the main hall, the Nanahon Sugi, and the Daishi Nagori no Sugi.
