Kochi Roads of Shikoku

Manjiro Trail

Manjiro Trail

This 14.8-kilometer route continues from Usubae through the birthplace of John Manjiro and on to Nakanohama before reaching central Tosashimizu City. At the starting point, Usubae Lighthouse, enjoy sweeping views of the endless Pacific horizon and the roaring clash of the Kuroshio Current. John Manjiro, for whom this trail is named, was born in Nakanohama, Tosashimizu City. He was the first Japanese person to travel to the mainland United States. After returning to Japan, he became an interpreter and influenced many imperial loyalists during the final years of the Edo period. His name "John" comes from the whaling ship that rescued him after he was cast adrift at sea, an event that led to his journey to America. Along this course, experience breathtaking natural scenery while tracing the footsteps of a remarkable historical figure.

    Famous water of Shimizu

This clear spring water wells up from the foot of the mountain and never runs dry, even at the height of summer. For generations, it has provided a welcome respite for townspeople and a vital water source for fishing boats. Together with Iwasa no Shimizu in Muroto City and Sakurai-do in Kochi City, this spring has long been celebrated as one of the Three Famous Waters of Tosa. In 1990, it was also named as one of the Prefecture's Top 40 Famous Waters of Tosa. Some say this spring even gave rise to the place name "Shimizu."
